Character Name: Stephane Benjamin, of house Lancaster
Source: OC
Personality: Born into a noble family fallen into disgrace and raised by one of the most prestigious families in his country, Stephane was always a bit of an atypical personality, even back in his world.
At a first glance, he may come out as a strange mix between a stereotypical knight from a story, and a teenager who doesn’t know when to shut up or how to be polite. It’s fair to say that he can adapt to different situations, but very rarely he will accept something he dislikes without protesting. He’s the kind of person who prefers to let people know of what bothers or annoys him, instead of having them guess about it.
Above all, Stephane is an independent thinker, refusing to have society dictate the rules he has to live by, and instead choosing to make his own choices and shaping his own fate, even in a world that is ruled by constant predictions of how the future will proceed.
He enrolled in the military academy when he was thirteen years old, mostly because he felt he was good at nothing else. He had a few problems because of his strong personality and his refusal to take orders without a justification that he finds logica, but as he grew and matured he learned that sometimes one has to shut up. This, unfortunately, didn’t mean he would ever apply this knowledge for most of his conversations with other people.
After having been appointed as the Prince’s personal Knight (in what he considers a lucky coincidence and nothing more), his top priority became the Prince’s safety and wishes. Even when Stephane will listen to that person’s every whim, and work to fulfill those wishes he deems sensible and logical, he will still openly contradict and antagonize the Prince if he thinks it’s needed. Him contradicting someone doesn’t mean he doesn’t respect that person, just that he disagrees with their opinions.
Even with all of this, he is more selfless than he lets on. Stephane barely has any wishes for himself, and most of his goals are for someone else’s sake (his Prince, his family and his country, in that order). He will always be glad to do his best to help anyone in need, even people he doesn’t completely know, as long as this doesn’t go over his priorities.
Stephane is a very responsible and dedicated person. He knows what his duties are, and if he accepts them as fair or at least logical, he will do his best to fulfill them. This doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy his free time, as he does quite love spending his (quite rare) free days lazing around and doing nothing of use. He enjoys doing sports, eating good food and television, and he is also okay with simple things like going out for a picnic.
He has a bit of a chivalrous streak, that was ingrained into him during both his military training and his time as the Knight. He will do all kinds of silly things like putting his coat on a puddle for women to cross and do all kinds old fashioned bows and salutes, he also knows hundreds of ways of polite address and etiquette but those he rarely even remembers to use.
His own personal code won’t ever allow him to harm an innocent unless there is absolutely no other way. He will look for workarounds in order to avoid getting to this, and if there is no way, then he will do what he has to do. Stephane will still mourn the person, even if it was because of his duty, and will work even harder the next time so things like these will not happen again.
He will always prefer to talk about an issue (though he may use all the wrong words and tone when doing it) before starting a fight, but if the fight is started he won’t hesitate at all.
He’s a driven person, he will fight to achieve any goals that he sets for himself, he will never give up, even if the odds are abysmally low, and will risk his life for those he feels he has to protect without thinking twice about it. This makes him reckless both in actions and in speech, and even more than a little tactless when he knows he doesn’t have to keep up a front.
Being a Knight and a noble, Stephane is well acquainted with the masks society has people wear. Because of this, he’s pretty good at detecting lies, but is pretty bad at lying himself unless the lie has been planned for a while. If he likes or dislikes someone, it will show all over his face, tone of voice and body language.
Even after having grown with five younger sisters, Stephane can still manage to be horrible dealing with both children and women, because of his blunt nature. He’s also pretty horrible dealing with men, but he always prefers ending up getting into a fight, which is what happens more often with men, than ending up hurting someone’s feelings without intending to do it.
This doesn’t mean he thinks less of women, just that he sees them as more sensitive, with some exceptions here and there, of course. He also recognizes he could use some more sensitiveness himself.
Regardless of his brashness, Stephane enjoys talking to new people. He’s curious about new places, and won’t hesitate to ask when faced with a doubt. He will gladly talk about his own life, and will share a conversation with whoever wishes to chat.
When he’s around someone he trusts, he can be really playful and he can tease a bit, depending on the person, but he will usually resort to sarcasm when in front of someone he dislikes.
The truth is that Stephane is all for physical activities, mostly because he knows he is good at those, and that failing at them won’t cause much trouble for anyone. He’s not one to be really prideful or to boast about his wins, but he does get satisfaction out of being the best at something.
Stephane sees himself as a pretty average person, even if he was born a bit special because of his lineage (see the abilities section for more on that), he doesn’t think that birth should determine how “special” or “important” a person should be. This is a view he shares with his Prince, and probably one of his strongest reasons for following him.
We could say that he’s more of a knight-type than he believes. He’s a natural protector, and aims to help his Prince change the world he lives in, he’s humble and noble as long as this doesn’t compromise his direct goals (or better said, the goals of the people he is protecting), and above all, he’s devoted to those who get close to him, probably even to unhealthy extremes.
History/Pull Point:
In Stephane’s world, thanks to a scientist named Horace Isaakson, science has helped humans to learn how to harness the capacity to see the lines of Causality and Coincidence, called the Currents. This ability is limited to a few gifted people, who can see the lines since birth, but the study of this science can be done by anyone with interest and enough brains.
To take care of this, the Regency created the Ministry of Forthcoming Affairs, which was led for several years by Horace’s son, Joachim.
Under the Ministry, the country prospered and grew, always making the right choices and moving through the safest paths, to the point that most people can’t even think of how their lives could continue without knowing the weather tomorrow, or exactly at what time their mother in law will be popping up for a surprise visit.
Stephane Benjamin, was raised as the eldest son of Lord Lancaster and his wife, but he is not their real child. This is something that only a select few know, among them Stephane, his parents and of course several people at the Ministry. For some reason, these news never reached the Regent’s ears, even when they are supposed to be the sharpest ears. Most people just believe that he is the son of the Lord and one of his attendants.
Stephane grew up with five younger sisters and is to be the heir of the Lancaster headship. He went to military school when he was thirteen, and finished his training at seventeen.
When he was a child, he had a few encounters here and there with Prince Alain, the heir for the Regency, but he could only see a spoiled brat who would treat everyone as if they were lower beings. He did quite dislike this attitude, and believed that was the kind of person the Prince was for years, at least until they had for once a serious conversation.
Stephane was struck by how mature the Prince seemed to be, considering he was barely eight years old at that time, and how strange his attitude towards his future work as a Regent was. Stephane was dispatched shortly after that, to help with the peace corps that worked in the furthest parts of the country, and returned when he was eighteen, and the Prince fourteen.
Stephane took a shot for the Prince that year, and it took him several months to recover. The Prince took the work of visiting in order to insult him for doing such a stupid thing, but Stephane just told him to stop being a spoiled brat, not quite caring about disrespecting one of the country’s most powerful persons.
Stephane was named the Knight a month after his recovery, and with little time he became the Prince’s most trusted person and personal attendant. It took him another year to discover that the Prince was actually a woman.
It was then that he learned that Alain’s plan had been to create a change from inside, and to change the rules that disallowed women from inheriting the titles their fathers held. Backing the Prince up there was the Lady (the Regent’s wife) and a few people at the Ministry.
Revolution was brewing, however, and the Regency was in danger. Thanks to the participation of the Minister of Forthcoming Affairs, an old acquaintance of lord Lancaster and student to Joachim Isaakson, Stephane learned about his true origin, as Joachim’s son, and of the abilities that were dormant within him.
Having decided to use those skills to stop the revolution from taking the power to make a change from Alain’s hands, Stephane went through the road of studying his real father’s legacy, to learn that even if many people could see the lines, very few could actually choose which ones to follow, and that he had this kind of power.
After a bunch of adventures, in which he managed to understand his own abilities and legacy, Stephane managed to stop the revolution and restore the Regency and the Elected Councils to their rightful places. However, he knew that even if things were on the right way, the change he and the Prince wanted to create would require the most utter dedication.
Stephane will be pulled from the end of his “canon”, after stopping the revolution and restoring the Regency and the Councils.
Abilities/Special Powers/Non average skills:
+ Military training. Excellent survival skills on the wild. Quick thinker, superior reflexes.
+ Enough knowledge and training to wield spears, swords and axes at a decent level, as they were traditional weaponry. Can fistfight if needed. He is actually a little rusty on these skills.
+ Superb marksmanship with guns, bows and crossbows. This was Stephane’s strongest skill before learning to “shape worlds”, as it was always subconsciously aided by his ability to see the Currents. Also known as “he can do some pretty ridiculous ricochet shots that would make experts cry like babies”.
+ The ability to see the Currents. This ability allows him to see many of the possible outcomes of a choice. Most of the time Stephane doesn’t even notice he’s using this ability. This does not have the ability to affect the choices other people make, and will usually just seem to be really good luck at the time of him doing something.
+ The ability to choose the Line of future he prefers to take, to this we refer to as “shaping worlds”. Even if Stephane has received some training, this ability can be extremely taxing on his brain, as viewing all the possibilities and then choosing one is quite a bit of information going into the head. When meditating he can do this without many side effects, but murderous headaches may and will happen once he’s done.
As an example, Stephane is in front of an attacker. He analyzes the situation, sees the chances (an attack happening, the attack not hitting, something distracting the attacker, and so on. He cannot create a new choice, but keep in mind that there are infinite universes spawning from each choice made by a person), and decides to live in a world where the attacker tripped over one of his shoelaces. The attacker falls face first to the ground, Stephane gets the best headache ever.
[Game Specific]
Character class: Knight
Why your character would be that class: Stephane was always closely linked to the Knight class, both by virtue of being a knight himself, because of his absolute devotion to the Prince, and his strict self-imposed moral code.
Powers/skills to be gained by being that class: He’s perfectly fine like this, though I guess his awesome revolver (which is the mark of his knighthood, and is all carved and pretty with runes and weird text, but actually does nothing but shoot normal bullets) will be morphing into a semi automatic crossbow that will look really pretty, and will do nothing but shoot crossbow bolts?
[Samples]
Log sample:
Had he arrived in company of the Prince, Stephane would’ve loved this place, even if it was only for how wonderfully old school it felt, but as he was now, he only could think about how he had to go back. Not that he didn’t trust Alain’s judgement or anything, but if he knew the Prince, and he certainly did, there was enough danger in this as it was.
So he needed a way back, and fast if possible. Of course Stephane was pretty aware that it wouldn’t be as easy as it sounded. First of all, the currents were really strange in this place, and even weirder he seemed to somehow have misplaced his ability to choose the currents. Keeping that would’ve been useful to leave this place, so it made sense that it would be taken away god knows how.
And then, there was the Crossbow issue. He could tell it was his gun from the pretty carvings and the weird runes, but other than that, it was a crossbow. Complete with bolts and stuff. At least it was semi-auto, and that was something he was thankful for, but still. It was the proof of his knighthood, and his favored weapon. Those were bad manners, weird world.
But still. Stephane was Stephane. He would somehow find a way back, even if it meant he would have to beat up whatever thing was causing this whole problem. Of course in order to do that, he should first get some extra information. Information was power, or so they said, and to be quite sincere, he wasn’t looking forward to that part.
Orb sample:
[A politely smiling young man is in the orb transmission at the moment. He looks surprisingly comfortable for a first timer.]
Good afternoon, I’m a newcomer. My name is Stephane Benjamin, from house Lancaster, but just “Stephane” is more than fine. I suppose you must see quite a few of these transmissions, so let’s spice it up a little with some conversation.
Is there any kind of organization among us uh... “heroes”? Or do you just roam around and do whatever you feel like? I wasn’t told anything about champion politics, and I wouldn’t like to step on any toes.
Also, does anyone at least know exactly what’s the thing we are supposed to be fighting? Other than whatever they told me about those thorns I’m pretty much walking in the dark here, and I’m in a bit of a hurry to go back.
Any information would be really useful. I can’t offer much in exchange, but maybe we can chat and find if I can be of any help, I’d be glad to lend a hand, even in exchange for some casual conversation.
